A Parent's Guide from Sunbury Stunt & Tumble Academy

If you're considering cheerleading for your child, one of the first questions you're likely to ask is: “Is cheerleading safe?”

Yes. Cheerleading can be a safe, positive and confidence-building sport for children when skills are taught progressively, athletes are appropriately supervised, and safety is prioritised.

At Sunbury Stunt & Tumble Academy in Sunbury, Victoria , safety and athlete wellbeing are central to how we coach.

1

Professional Coaching

Appropriate coaching, supervision and clear skill progressions are important parts of managing risk in cheerleading. Athletes build technique, strength and confidence before progressing.

2

Appropriate Equipment

Classes use appropriate mats, equipment and structured preparation to support safe skill development and give athletes a suitable environment to learn.

3

A Strong Safety Culture

Children are encouraged to communicate, listen to their bodies and develop at an appropriate pace in an environment where respect, teamwork and wellbeing matter.

4

Physical & Mental Benefits

Cheerleading can help children develop strength, coordination, body awareness, confidence, resilience, teamwork and connection when taught in a positive environment.

Cheerleading is more than a sport — it's a place where kids can build confidence, friendships and a love for movement in a supportive environment.

Is cheerleading appropriate for beginners?

Yes. Children do not need previous cheerleading, tumbling or gymnastics experience to begin cheerleading.

Beginner athletes start with fundamentals such as body control, balance, coordination, introductory tumbling foundations, stunt technique and teamwork. Skills are introduced progressively as the athlete becomes ready.

Can children get injured doing cheerleading?

Yes. Like other physical sports, cheerleading involves some risk of injury. Risk cannot be completely removed from sport, but it can be managed.

STA's approach includes foundational skill development, appropriate mats and equipment, correct technique, physical preparation, athlete-readiness monitoring, supervision and spotting.

Is tumbling safe for children?

Tumbling can be taught safely when children develop the necessary strength, body control and technique through progressive instruction.

Beginners start with foundations and work toward more difficult skills as their ability increases. Good technique is prioritised rather than simply completing a skill.

Is stunting safe for children?

Stunting can be taught safely when skills are appropriate to the athletes' level and are performed with correct technique, supervision and progression.

Coaches consider strength, technique, timing, communication, confidence and the readiness of the entire stunt group before progressing.
